Many people wonder why some individuals can use alcohol without problems but others cannot. One important reason has to do with genetics. Scientists have found that having an alcoholic family member makes it more likely that if you choose to drink you too may develop alcoholism. Genes, however, are not the whole story.
Although men are more likely to drink alcohol and drink in larger amounts, gender differences in body structure and chemistry cause women to absorb more alcohol, and take longer to break it down and remove it from their bodies (i.e., to metabolize it). In other words, upon drinking equal amounts, women have higher alcohol levels in their blood than men, and the immediate effects occur more quickly and last longer. These differences also make women more vulnerable to alcohols long-term effects on their health.
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), about one-quarter of heavy drinkers will develop alcoholic hepatitis, which causes the liver to become inflamed and cells to die.
College binge drinking rates were 31 percent lower, 33 percent compared to 48 percent, in seven states that had four or more laws targeting high volume sales of alcohol as opposed to states that did not.
