- A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report has stated that drinking causes at least 1.8 million deaths a year, or almost five percent of all worldwide deaths. "Public-health problems that are commonly associated with alcohol consumption have reached alarming proportions and alcohol has become one of the most important risks to health globally," the report boldly stated.
- The risk of a hemorrhagic stroke is up to three times more likely among alcoholics than in people that do not drink.
- Among young males, alcohol is one of the main causes in 50% of drownings.
- In 1992, out of the $66.7 billion in estimated productivity loss for employees with past or current alcoholism, losses were greatest for male employees who initiated drinking before age 15.
